This
new work in a five play series from Theatre in Decay deserves to be
judged on many levels, not only for the fresh script and fine performances
but also specifically for the unique performance method. If you enjoy
cutting edge theatre, or challenging your own comfort zone, Empire
is definitely recommended. After arriving at the 'venue', a street corner in North Melbourne, the audience is split into twos or threes and these small groups are led off in different directions by an escort. You will be led to an unremarkable parked car and ushered into the back, in the dark. You will notice an actor in the front passenger seat and the play begins. Each performance in each car will differ as the actors have been given room to improvise around the story, which focuses on race crime, patriotism, paranoia and civic responsibility. The passions evoked by these issues are brought to life with incredible urgency and pathos due to the performance style. The results are fantastic and forty minutes spent in one of the cars reignited a mind somewhat weary of the ever-present issue of Western political power play. www.theatreindecay.com http://www.theartscentre.net.au/vibe/reviews.htm#empire |
